The Reading Lab is designed to build upon the student’s knowledge and also to reinforce and expand each child’s skills as they develop. 

In the Reading Lab, texts are available that present a wide variety of information to engage the children at personal reading levels. Students meet on a daily basis as they learn to respond to questions orally and in written form.

Objectives
Lesson Plans will be written in perspective to each grade level and designed to meet the needs of students enrolled in the Reading Lab. The curriculum is designed not only to build upon the students' knowledge but also reinforce and expand with the children's skills as they develop.

First through Third Grade Objectives

• Increase phonemic awareness and knowledge of phonics, blends, and decoding skills
• Improve fluency and expression using oral and choral reading
• Enhance comprehension with improvements of listening skills, understanding of text, and enrichment of vocabulary
• Expand writing skills
• Develop metacognitive skills
• Expand oral language

 

Fourth through Eighth Grade Objectives

• Increase comprehension by strengthening fluency, vocabulary, working memory, analytical skills and cognitive reasoning
• Improve analytical skills to interpret narrative text, expository text, poetry and graphs
• Develop metacognitive skills in text analysis, summarizing, and outlining
• Expand writing skills in use of grammar, sentence structure, and vocabulary range

Training and instruction for reading resources, like the St. Michael Reading Lab, is held at The Neuhaus Education Center. The center has provided training and professional development for our reading teachers at St. Michael and throughout the diocese. It is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing reading teachers with the skills they need to enhance their curriculum and encourage students to excel in language arts. The Center specializes in curriculum for students with reading differences, including dyslexia.
