| History Of Our School The first Catholic school in Ripley was taught in a small frame building that occupied the site on Second St. where the Methodist church now stands. This building was moved to a lot on North Second Street, below the old shoe factory. It is owned by Mr. H. J. Trapp, and occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Roy Prickett. The second Catholic school was held in a small brick building on North Main Street, south of the first church. This building also still stands and is owned by Mr. and Mrs. Henry (Rudy) Lightner.
In 1864, a two-story brick building was erected on a lot next to the church on Fourth Street. The youth of the congregation were taught in rooms on the first floor and in one room upstairs; the teachers lived in rooms on the second floor of the school building. This building still stands, and was used as the rectory. It is now occupied by the custodian of the present school, church, and parish hall.
When the present church building was put in use in 1890, the former church building below it, on Fourth street, was divided by a partition to provide two rooms and used as a school. It was the school for 35 years. It is now the parish hall, and used as the school cafeteria, which was started in September, 1961.
During his pastorate in 1914, Father Theodosious began to make plans and to collect quite a sum of money toward building a new school. It remained, however, for Father Ambrose to begin and complete the erection of the present modern school at the head of Market Street. The cornerstone was laid September 23, 1923, with impressive ceremonies. This school building contained four classrooms and living quarters of six rooms for the sisters; also a large basement used as a playroom. Eight grades of common school are taught. The present enrollment is around 165.
In the early days most of the teachers were men. A Christian Trapp was the first teacher. The records show the following persons listed as teachers and where only the date is shown, it is assumed that it marks the beginning of the teaching term.
Anthony Kruckenkamp, 1857; Mr. Nicholas Becker, 1863; Mr. Francis Xavier Ruland, 1867; Mr. Vollmecke, 1868; Mr. Wannemacher, 1868; Mr. Hummes, 1869-1872; Mr John Gard, 1872-1873; Mr. Adelheid Schaffenberger, 1873; Mr. Merl, 1875; Mr. Zeigler, 1878; Mr. Merl, 1880; Mr. Haas, 1880-1882; Mr. Meies, 1882-1884. Miss Tegler Gerth and Miss Elizabeth Arbogast also taught in the schools about this time. The Sisters of St. Francis from Rochester, Minn., came to Ripley and taught in our schools from 1884 until 1904. For the school terms 1904 -1905, Miss Lorena Schwallie and Miss Rose Schreckler were the teachers. The Benedictine Sistes from Erie, Pennsylvania, taught from 1905-1908. Mr. John Schiffer was the teacher from 1908-1910.
In 1912, the Sisters of Divine Providence, at the time from Newport, Kentucky, came to Ripley, and are still in charge here as teachers in St. Michael's Parochial School. For the school term 1961-1962, the present Sisters are Sisters Helen Joseph, Principal; Sister Mary Consalota; Sisters Mary Rosella; and Sister Paul Marion. The pastor is the Reverend Paul E. Cornwell. (Compiled by Mildred Klein Klinker)
